In celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the SMU Chamber Choir, in collaboration with SMU Symphonia, is proud to present an original aural spectacular in this year’s “In the Heart of the Musical”.

The traditional setting of the theatre is redefined with the choir and band encircling the audience to deliver a remarkable 360-degree performance. Stripped of the conventional stage, the audience will rediscover musicals with a completely new surround-sound experience right in the centre of the performance. 

“In the Heart of the Musical” is an immersive journey that takes you through timeless classics, including an exclusively arranged Les Misérables medley.

Kicking off the soundscape will be old school Rock ‘n’ Roll from the 60’s before we jive to disco from the psychedelic 70’s, hip-hop to the street music from the 80’s and 90’s, and end the night with modern pop music.

BEYOND 2016: [IDENTITY] challenges the boundaries and stereotypes of contemporary dance by featuring the unconventional use of props and styles along with new and light-hearted pieces to express humorous and modern ideas. 

The performance departs from the usual sombre style that has come to typify SMU INDANCITY’s choreography. It highlights the club’s progression over the past decade with a remake of old pieces in celebration of SMU INDANCITY’s 10th Anniversary.

Creating a new concert-going experience for the audience, this year’s production includes a special pre-show segment that will change your perception of contemporary dance. Don’t miss out on the surprises – book your tickets now!

Karam

Karam is an introspective, original theatre production that follows the lives of three fresh graduates from different backgrounds as they join the workforce.

The first was schooled in religious education; the second, secular education; and the third switched from religious to secular education after primary school. As they embark on their new journeys, each of them handles the transition very differently; their thinking and decisions shaped by the very education they have received.

Karam is a story of self-discovery put up by SMU Malay Language and Cultural Club. It highlights real and emotionally charged issues facing many young people in the Malay community today.  The music accompaniment features the Kompang, a traditional Malay drum often seen at festivities.

Leave your notions of Chinese music at the door. Cornucopia invites you into the stunning realms of jazz-fusion and contemporary music to discover the modern definition of the traditional Chinese orchestra.

Cornucopia comprises a series of contemporary chamber works rescored for Chinese instruments. Instead of the huge fanfare associated with Chinese orchestra music, the performance will feature chamber works deviating from traditional tonality, while maintaining the beauty of the oriental overtures.

Salsa Fiesta!: Fresco Edition

Hola! SMU Caderas Latinas is conducting its first salsa workshop to put the sassy Latin American moves into every dancing foot on campus.
 
As long as you can wiggle to the beat, you can join the Beginner Workshop to pick up the basic steps to take to the dance floor easily. For seasoned dancers, join the Intermediate Workshop where a professional instructor will inject a fresh jab of hip-hop into your salsa twist.

Practise your newly acquired moves in true salsa spirit at the first street-style salsa party. Immerse in a unique social dancing environment infused with Spanish flavour and festivity with popular salsa DJ, and dance the night away to live salsa music.

Head down to the hottest hip-hop competition in town, where students from SMU Eurhythmix and the alumni crew from SMU Eluminix go head-to-head with self-choreographed dance items.
 
Eight teams will hit the dance floor and the top team from each dance crew will vie for the grand title of SMU’s first hip-hop champion.

Get ready to be electrified by the adrenaline-pumping and razor-sharp moves. Cheer for your favourite team and feel the rush of the competition with live commentaries from our esteemed judges: SMU Eurhythmix’s resident coach Gin Lam, OSchool’s An-An, Danz People’s Kayte Willis, and winners of The Dance Floor 2016 and Singapore Dance Delight 2016 – scRach MarcS.

Featuring an open item performed by all the dancers choreographed by Gin Lam,  and guest performances including scRach MarcS, NTU MJ and Fuyo.

The Batik print and traditional Saman dance, two of Indonesia’s well-loved art forms, are the focal points of this year’s showcase on Indonesian traditions – “Kultur”.
 
Did you know that Indonesian Batik is registered on UNESCO’s cultural heritage list? Using the old-fashioned wax-resistant dye technique, you can try batik painting on materials such as kites, masks and paper fans. Bring home your very own batik creation as a souvenir!

Catch the Saman dance by our students. Known as the “dance of thousand hands”, Saman is characterised by intricate hand movements and fast-paced rhythms. Experience the excitement, and grab the opportunity to take a ‘selfie’ with our traditional dancers!
 
Don’t miss ‘The Wall of History’ exhibit that features the timeless beauty of Indonesian culture.

Originating from the US in the 70s, funk incorporates a variety of ‘popping’ and ‘locking’ movements, and an infusion of high-adrenalin dance styles choreographed to funk music.

Learn more about the exciting world of funk as energetic dancers from SMU Funk Movement showcase the visual, musical and geographical differences behind various forms of street dance. Marvel at the possibilities as these styles are combined across different genres.

Igniting the thrill is live music from SMU Voix and SMU Music Interactive Club, and guest performances by SMU Eurhythmix (Breakers).

Voice Personality Hunt 2016

Join us in our search for the next SMU Superstar!
 
Started in 2008, Voice Personality Hunt is SMU's only annual talent search competition which aims to discover the next master of ceremonies amongst our student population.

Each contestant is paired with another. The duo is expected to leverage on one another’s strengths to hone their oratorical skills, project their stage presence and find their chemistry with their stage partner. Contestants will compete on wit, humour and delivery in three rounds of competition that consummates with the Grand Final. 

Come and witness the emergence of the next SMU Voice Personality.

Introducing ‘The Piano Conversation’ – where two facing pianists improvise their pieces based on keys chosen by members of the audience. Can you keep up with the modulating melodies as the pianos ‘talk’ to each other with spontaneity and flair? Join in the fun as you explore all the keys of the musical scale with SMU Ivory Keys!

Featuring guest performers from the NUS Piano Ensemble and NTU Piano Ensemble, and a trio comprising the piano, violin and cello performed together with our friends from SMU Symphonia.

As the very first camp freshmen can look forward to, Arts Camp gives each participant the rare opportunity to be exposed to the wide range of SMU's Arts CCAs, and create newfound friendships in the transition into university life. 
 
7 years in the running, this year's Arts Camp 2016 aims to be the bigger and better than ever before.
