Over the years, the Choir has traveled to and received numerous awards in many music festivals around the world. The Choir’s most recent stint was in Salzburg, Austria, with its participation in the 2nd Salzburg International Choral Celebration and Competition last year. The choir attained 2 Gold Diplomas, emerged as Category Winner and a Grand Prix finalist.

In addition to biennial overseas tours, the Choir also performs frequently at various local events such as school exchanges, community outreach programs, carolling projects and an annual Production — Wrinkles in The Air.

The idea of a family is embraced throughout the history of SMU Chamber Choir. Most singers in the Choir stay as part of the family after graduation, train together with undergraduates, and participate in all productions - for the sole enthusiasm for singing with a sense of belonging.

Q1. Who conducts regular training for the club?

A1. Cultural Medallion winner Jennifer Tham is the Artistic Director of the SMU Chamber Choir; we call her Jen. Jen has been with the choir since our formation, directing our artistic growth, conducting us at home and aboard, enabling our musicianship. She is best known as the conductor of the SYC Ensemble Singers and is trained as a composer, which explains why she is always trying new ways of doing things. She loves the entire spectrum of music from “avant-garde” music to feel-good pop and musical theatre, which explains her repertoire choices for us. Kenny Khoo is the Conductor of SMU Chamber Choir and is one of the founding members of the Choir. Working closely with Jennifer, he continues to advance the mission and vision of the Choir, guiding the team to infinity and beyond. Since 2017, Kenny has led the Choir in performances and competitions, most recently at the 2nd Salzburg International Choral Celebration and Competition where the Choir emerged as a Grand Prix Final.

Q2. What kind of pieces do we learn and perform?

A2. We sing the full spectrum of choral music—from 16th century choral standards to present-day pop. As a diverse group of music-makers from different backgrounds, we love to explore different genres, learning of other worlds through different musics, different languages.

Q3. What makes SMU Chamber Choir a favorable place to be?

A3. We enable anyone—with or without choir experience or musical background—to become a better version of themselves as a singer, as a member of our choir family. Our coaches and alumni are life coaches, keen to watch you find your voice, grow as a musician and succeed at life.

Q4. What kind of commitment do we expect from members?

A4. We meet twice a week through the semester, on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings; taking a break during exams. A lot of music is learnt and made each time, so attendance at both rehearsals is ideal.

Q5. What would we love to see from our potential members?

A5. A passion or desire to sing and teamwork spirit are values we love to see from our potential members. While choir experience is preferable, we welcome committed individuals with no musical background, who want to learn choral singing.

FAQ

SMU Chamber Choir has been like a second family to me, and I have really enjoyed the many performances, competitions and practices that we went through together. It was great seeing so many of us working so hard towards our goal and creating a new legacy for SMU Chamber Choir.

“It’s always a different choir”. Maybe it’s a different song or different combination of people - that’s the beauty of being in SMU Chamber Choir. I learnt that there is “no same 2nd chance” and this constantly reminds me to always do my best.
