SMU Eurhythmix, or affectionately known as EMIX, is SMU’s premier Hip-Hop club. Known for its professionalism, showmanship, and technicality, EMIX’s mission is to “train and provide dancers with opportunities and exposure to hip-hop, to guide them to their maximum potential and inculcate a strong passion for hip-hop”. Beyond quality choreographies, every performance is put up with the aim of resonating with the audience, and bringing across relatable messages with a tint of humour.
EMIX is also known for its creative signature productions – “Timeless” and “RAW” – as well as its active involvement in various events. During summer, EMIX holds its annual dance camp, EMIX JAM, and internal dance battle competition, EMIX WAR.
EMIX JAM exposes dancers to a variety of dance genres through the collaboration with external dance instructors, and fosters bonding through games.
EMIX WAR encourages dancers to step out of their comfort zone and explore freestyling with the help of the seniors. EMIX also finds time to give back to the community through its community service initiative – Youth-Rhythmix (Y-MIX).
Date, venue and timing of regular meetings/trainings per week:
EMIX conducts its trainings twice a week: Mondays (7.30pm to 10.30pm) and Saturdays (3.30pm to 6.30pm). Trainings are held in SMU’s Arts & Culture Centre (ACC).
"EMIX is not just any dance club but a club that you can definitely count on for an exciting campus life ahead. In EMIX, everyone is bonded over one thing which is the love for dance. Dance your heart out with us as you embark on your SMU journey.": Joslyn Seah, Member, Year 1 (AY 2019/20)
"For me, SMU Eurhythmix has always been a sanctuary away from the rigorous academic demands as an undergraduate. I am extremely grateful to have found this place where I can not only hone a craft that I remain deeply passionate about, but also somewhere where I have forged life-long friendships.": Lai Wen Le, President of 16th ExCo, Alumni (Class of 2020)
Q1: Who are the instructors/choreographers of EMIX?
A1: EMIX is led by our Resident Choreographer, Gin Lam, and our Assistant Resident Choreographer, Derrick Ng. Occasionally, we also engage external instructors who are professional dancers in the arts scene to enrich our dancers. Some external instructors that we have previously engaged includes Xue Hui, Haikal, Xavier, Krisha, Ronnie, and Zaihar. Emixers, who are keen to explore choreographing, are also provided with various platforms to share their choreographies with the club.
Q2: Does EMIX explore genres other than Hip Hop?
A2: Apart from being mainly trained in Hip Hop, dancers are also exposed to other genres during our trainings, gigs and productions.
Q3: What is the culture like in EMIX?
A3: In line with our vision, EMIX inculcates a family-like culture where we aim to foster a strong sense of belonging. We actively encourage an open community so that our dancers are reassured, and hence able to pursue anything the under the sun. This culture is slowly built through our interactions with one another, especially during productions and trainings where dancers get to mingle with other batches and our alumni (Eluminix).
Q4: Do I need any dance background to join EMIX?
A4: Nope! We welcome everyone regardless of their dance backgrounds. We believe in one’s passion and value dancers with great learning attitude. Everyone got to start from somewhere!
Q5: When will auditions be and how will it be conducted?

You do not have to worry about committing to this sign-up as you can still decide if you would like to join us at the auditions! ☺
