SMU Funk Movement (SMUFM) is a street style dance club that specialises in funk styles, Popping and Locking. Established in 2013, SMUFM believes in grooming its members into a close-knitted community of self-motivated dancers who value Respect, Humility and Discipline. Ranging from choreographies to freestyle sessions and dance battles, dancers from SMUFM take pride in their art form and are always ready to venture into the external dance scene.

Dancers of SMUFM often participate in external dance battles, representing the club in events such as the recent Ladies’ Exchange, Under One Groove and Locking Academia Street Jam Volume 1. With constant guidance and support from the seniors and alumni, members empower one another to develop their craft and encourage others to step out of their comfort zone, even beyond dance.

Initiation and Coming of Age are FM’s key annual dance battles that serve as milestones for members’ growth. The club also performs for school events such as ACF Arts Camp and Vivace. Productions are a yearly affair for FM as well, with its latest live production being RE:LIVE 2022. Members also get to experience the Back To Funk series, the club’s annual camp, alongside workshops taught by instructors from the local (and sometimes international) dance scene.

Can we join the club with no dance experience at all?
Of course! SMU Funk Movement is beginner-friendly and open to people with no prior dance background. Many seniors in the club started with no background and over time, they have grown in skill and stature to represent our club in external dance battles. We believe it is never too late for someone to pursue their passion or try something new, especially when it comes to dance. So, don't be afraid to take your first step with us!

Who conducts regular training for the club?
Our resident dance instructors are Nic Ho and Fong. Both instructors have been with SMUFM since 2013!

With 16 years of dance experience, Nic Ho has been equipping members with strong Popping foundations and providing guidance for performances since SMUFM was established. He is active in the current street dance scene, and is a founder of New Heights Studio.

Fong started teaching dance in 2008 at various local dance studios such as O School and Brave Dancers. He is one of the pioneer Locking dancers in the scene and has represented Singapore in several international dance competitions. He is a cofounder of New Heights Studio alongside Nic.

What would the commitment be like if I join?
Training takes place twice a week on Monday and Thursday evenings; Seniors and alumni sharing occurs on Mondays while training by our resident instructors occurs on Thursdays. The commitment level for members may increase nearing internal dance battles or yearly production.

FM organizes and participates in performances and dancers are highly encouraged to participate in these opportunities. However, these events do not require compulsory participation and hence, you can sign up based on your interest and availability.
Outside of training hours, our members are often seen engaging in freestyle dance cyphers and training together in school!  We also have fun gatherings and celebrations such as Funky Christmas and celebrating FM’s birthday.
