“SMU MLCC has brought a new dimension to my SMU experience. Through the immersive cultural activities offered by SMU MLCC, I have been able to learn more about the Malay arts & culture.” - Mohamad Danial, Member, SOE Y2 (AY20/21)

“Being a member of Rentak, it has certainly made my days in school lively! Having no background in music, it still did not hinder me from learning about the beauty of Malay percussion! It has also been amazing to make new friends with the same passion.” – Sakinah Amat Zaidi, Member, SCIS Y1 (AY20/21)

SMU Malay Language & Cultural Club (MLCC) aims to create a greater awareness and appreciation of our arts while cultivating strong bonds within the community, in and out of SMU. We have two performing arts wings - Rentak and Persadamu.

Rentak is a Malay percussion ensemble. Under the guidance of Singapore’s prominent Malay performing artists, members will learn about different malay instruments and its various playing styles. You will also get the chance to perform at multiple gigs throughout the year. Sounds interesting? Then our annual Rentak Experience Day (coming soon!) is something you should not miss!

Persadamu is our biennial theatre production that allows members to raise pertinent issues in the Malay community. It is a ground-up initiative of student-led teams with mentorship from distinguished figures in the Malay arts scene. You will get to learn how to make a production a hit - from acting, scriptwriting, producing, stage management and more! This year, Persadamu and Rentak are collaborating to produce our first ever film, so keep a lookout for the premiere dates!

While we promote our culture through these two wings, you are warmly invited to MLCC’s various bonding events such movie night, night cycling, arts workshop & educational talks!
